Did Auburn grad Charity Lawson make the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ finals?

The Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy is still within reach of Auburn University graduate Charity Lawson, whose rumba and quick-step catapulted her to the “Dancing with the Stars” finale thanks to an unexpected twist during Tuesday’s semifinals round.

In the Latin dance round, “The Bachelorette” star’s rumba (with professional dance partner Artem Chigvintsev) set to Skylar Grey’s “Love the Way You Lie (Part III)” earned two 10s from the judges for a total of 29, followed by her first-ever perfect 30 thanks to an impressive quick-step set to “Boss” by Fifth Harmony.

Also earning 30s in the semifinals were Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov’s foxtrot, Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach’s Paso doble, and Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy’s samba and waltz.

Fans waited anxiously for the results, but the long-running ABC competition series pulled the rug from under them at the last second to reveal that all five couples will compete in next week’s finale.

Remaining couples: Charity Lawson and Artem Chigvintsev, Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy, Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov, Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach, Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber.

The finale will feature a redemption round as well as freestyle dances from each couple. The “Dancing with the Stars” finale will air on ABC at 7 p.m. central Tuesday, Dec. 5.

As a “Dancing with the Stars” contestant, Lawson will follow in the footsteps of former “Bachelorette” stars Hannah Brown and Kaitlyn Bristowe, both of whom won the Mirrorball trophy during their seasons. Brown, a Tuscaloosa native and former Miss Alabama USA, took the title in 2019 with partner Alan Bersten.

Lawson, a native of Columbus, Georgia, is a child and family therapist who holds bachelor and master’s degrees from Auburn. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lawson was named as the Bachelorette after appearing as a contestant on Season 27 of “The Bachelor.”

Lawson provided the first Auburn connection to the Bachelor franchise since Madison Prewett, a foster parent recruiter and AU graduate (and oldest daughter of Auburn’s director of basketball operations, Chad Prewett), appeared during Season 24 with Bachelor Peter Weber.

Lawson also was the first Alabama-connected lead in the franchise since Brown starred in Season 15 of “The Bachelorette.” One of the the suitors during Lawson’s season, Kaleb Kim of Norcross, Georgia, played offensive line for the Auburn Tigers 2016-2019. He was eliminated during the second episode.
